I would rewrite the sentence entirely or use broken down. The term is widely
used in Chemistry (a process whereby a chemical compound is decomposed into
simpler constituents), or in electronic publishing (decomposition of an
illustration into pixels by a scanner). But...

Also, detach, unlink....
