I too am a contractor who used to be a captive, and my motivating factor for
becoming a contractor was also the job market (having been laid off twice in
a row) while having a family to support.

Funnily enough, since becoming a contractor I have worked more steadily for
one company (one of my contracts) than I ever did in my previous 15-plus
years as an employee.

Instead of laying me off entirely when times got tough, they reduced my
contracted hours. It works out for each of us. There is a tremendous savings
for the company since they do not have to pay any taxes, overhead, etc.,
plus they get the benefit of continuity and accumulated corporate knowledge.
(In my experience there has never been a contractor who actually does "hit
the ground running" -- they have to first prepare the ground, perform the
system [and human] handshaking, ask questions, etc.)

Therefore if I were hiring, I would not dismiss contractors out of hand.
Definitely look at their motivation and background.
