If you keep the status quo, then Keith Cronin is correct: they are called dialog boxes.

However, for what's it worth, we use the method suggested by Geoff Hart:
22. Click the "Options" button.
23. In the Options dialog box [screenshot follows], do....

We translate all our manuals and this seems to work quite well.
