Your old managers didn't die and they don't stay at the same place forever. A couple of bosses I have had in the past (that I absolutely despised) turned up a few years later in other organizations where I was working.

At a recent interview, I was asked about the management at the company that laid me off last June. I was cautious, and said that they were doing the best they could in the current uncertain market. Turns out the interviewer lives next door to the VP of engineering at my former place of employment. I'm certainly glad I was tactful during the interview.
