So, without naming names or companies, I talked about the manager who handed off projects and never followed through, the one who's sole concern seemed to be what time I walked through the door, the great manager who spent an significant part of the day running interference with other departments so his writers could get the information they needed when they needed it.
I'm sure I revealed things about myself, but I figured that was ok. If I let a prospective manager know what I expect of him or her, that could be a good thing.
A *very* good thing---both the honesty and the tactful way you expressed it.
Both of best managers I've ever worked for started off by asking me how I wanted to be managed. In the first case, I was young enough to be intimidated by the manager's title and position, and didn't say anything. It took a full year to get the kinks worked out of our working relationship. The second time a new manager asked me that question, I took a deep breath and told him. Best decision I ever made.
