In fairness, I should mention that there's at least one subscriber on Techwr-L
who insists that Master Documents work fine.

I believe he has posted the URL of an article in which he describes his technique
for success. I haven't looked into it, because I haven't had a problem with long
Word documents since version 2.0 for Windows.
