Dear Techwr-l,

Having checked the archives and come up nearly empty-handed, I turn to the
live audience, looking for a labeling convention for portions of
illustrations.

I am editing a small document that explains how to replace a small set of
parts in a giant machine. There are two full-page (8.5 x 11 inch) technical
drawings to go with this document. Each drawing is titled and numbered
something like: QRS Assembly, L0600-00.slddrw. The engineer who wrote the
doc and drew the tech drawings has up to 4 separate 'Figures' within each
full-page drawing (Figures 1 & 2 in one drawing and Figures 1-4 in the
second drawing). One 'Figure' within each tech drawing has numbered
call-outs which are referenced in the text. Each 'Figure' is NOT a standard
'View' as is expected in a tech drawing (side, top, front), so he doesn't
want them labeled 'View.' He also does not want a separate technical drawing
for each 'Figure.'

I think that labeling each portion of the technical drawing as a 'Figure'
may be misleading since readers may expect each 'Figure' to be a separate
drawing--separated from other figures by at least a border or on separate
pages, etc. And we should not have two different items labeled 'Figure 2.'
in one document. I feel 'Figure' is the broadest term (synonymous with
'Drawing'), with 'View' being a subset of a 'Figure' or a drawing.

So is there another, better term for each portion of a drawing?

I'm sure there must be a standard convention somewhere for this, but haven't
found it yet. Whatever convention we decide on will become part of the
corporate style for future drawings. I would appreciate any and all
suggestions for this. (An earlier post on a related query recommended
"Everyone's Guide to Successful Publications" by Elizabeth Adler. I'll check
into that to start.)

Please cc me directly as I'm on digest. Thanks in advance.

Tired of splitting hairs and arguing 'semantics,'
