Reading Marguerite's post chimed a bell for me. I took a course at
Northeastern University in Information Architecture during the fall, and one
of the essays that really stuck with me was by Roger Whitehouse.

His company was designing informational signs for a facility that dealt with
the visually impaired. They did testing on which fonts were most visible,
which type of contrast (light words on a dark background or dark words
on a light background) was easiest to see and the degree of contrast
preferred (I think it turned out to be the strongest possible). They even
wound up designing their own font because the letters had to be read
tactilely as well as visually.

Pretty interesting essay along the lines of user centered design and the
impact of font and contrast...
