Does anybody know what (if anything) is "usual
procedure" for companies:

a) with regard to keeping employee records for some
number of years (especially after employment ends) and,

b) with regard to the records from divisions that fold?

For example, JDS is about to essentially close out its
formerly gigantic presence here in Ottawa, ON, Canada.
They've employed tens of thousands in this area. What
is the likely fate of all those employment records?

Similarly, I worked for Philips Communications, Inc. in
Montreal for 9+ years, but the parent company,
NV Philips of the Netherlands, closed down the 1500
employee facility in 1991, and the building wore the
Motorola logo for years. I have vaguely kept track of
perhaps two people from those days. While I could make
up almost anything about those years, who could check?
More to the point, if there was some question and I
actually WANTED to check/confirm, what are the odds?

Do employers put any weight, at all, on any but the
most recent couple of years in a person's resume?

Mine's not too bad, and I keep it truthful because it's
hard to keep track of lies... or so I've heard... <g>

Hmmm... a couple of years ago, I filled out my
life-story, yet again, for security clearance. I
wonder if/how the Mounties and CSIS did any of
their supposed background checking. Hmmm.
