Not to burst your bubble or anything, but I know some programmers who are
excellent writers, as well as being very good at software development.

Sure, but: As a programmer, I'd agree with the generalization that
programmers can't write very well. It's not always true, but in
my experience, most programmers *don't* write that well, and in fact
don't *like* to write. Programmers prefer to program, and that's
why documentation almost always gets left until last -- if indeed
it ever gets written at all. :-)

The biggest reason for not letting programmers write the manuals is that
coding is worth more to their companies than writing.
