Interesting tidbit from Jeff Hanvey:

...
Or, if I'm sending out a standard cover letter (if the job doesn't list any
details, and when you're desperate to get work, as I during the full *year*
of unemployment, you'll respond to just about anything), I'd forget to
change company name information.
...

I recently posted a job opening for an administrative position, which
requires an extremely detailed oriented (dare I say anal?) person.

I can't tell you how many cover letters I received that had the wrong
company information in the inside address, listed a different position than
the one we were hiring for, and then in the body explained how "detail
oriented" the person was!

Now I'm all for cut & paste, and I certainly have reused a standard cover
letter. But honestly, if you can't get it right in the application process,
it's tough for me to believe the "detail oriented" claim.
