Personally, I find this annoying because after I perform the task
according to the book I remain with nothing, no deeper knowledge of
the underlying reasons/technology, no added value.

Erika,

there are different kinds of cookbooks. Some - the ones you mention -
concern themselves mostly with concrete tasks, such as creating a meat
loaf. But there are others that are more concerned with basic
information, less with specific recipies (e.g., The Complete Guide to
Cookery by Anne Willan).

Tech writing tie-in: We should try to provide our readers with all the
information they need. This will often include descriptions of systems
and concepts, not just reciipe-like procedures.
