A discussion of the birth of the universe itself does not suggest the
generation of life? Notice that the word "birth" (deliberately chosen above)
is virtually synonymous with the concept of origin: the "birth of a nation",
the "birth of the universe". Birth as a symbol and metaphor for origin and
creation of just about anything is one of the most stable and fundamental
aspects of human language.
And of course the author of the article was punning on the word "bang". She
was doing so because the entire topic is redolent of the symbolism of
procreation and birth. If she is to be faulted, it is for making a pun so
obvious and trite that it hardly needed to be made.
