In theory, perhaps. But even if it's not safe to let a writer do something, the chances are that you can observe. And, in this case, there's absolutely no excuse. When you're dealing with open source software, it's extremely easy to get the software versions you need. Anybody who doesn't lacks either initiative or even a gram of professionalism.

Yes, I've often had that response, too. Still, other people's expectations aren't any reason for abandoning your responsibilities.
