In this particular case, I would have easily preferred no
editor at all to what I had to deal with, but as I mentioned
when I first described this situation, this individual was
imposed on us from outside the technical publications group.
When I have had the luxury of choosing my own editors, I
have generally looked for people who could guide the writers
toward achieving the goal of a common look and feel in the
docs yet still have the flexibility to recognize that in a
technologically evolving process the style has to change at
times as well. Technical reviews have seldom been in the
job description, but an editor who could provide some help
in that area would always be a bonus.
