weren't you grandfathered in when a company you were at was
bought by another?

Our company was purchased by Merck, but it was before I came to work here. I was the first technical writer hired in our little lab, by the way.

Also...I think you may well know more than you think.

OK, OK... I took some biology classes in college, back when dinosaurs ruled the world and tech writing skills included light boxes and blue pencils. I fed cats in a genetics lab in the early 1970's. And, at the risk of offending others on this list when I say this -- I have received hate mail in the past -- I am a quick learner with an IQ of 148. Which means I have absorbed a lot of knowledge over my half-century of life.

Tell me...if I came to you and asked you to write something involving
laser-induced fluorescence or frequencies of catalytic reactions, would your
eyes glaze over, or would you at least know how to start, where to go, and
what questions to ask?

My eyes don't glaze over often, except when I am thinking of where to go, how to start, and who to ask questions of. I work with laser-induced fluorescence every day; I can even spell "fluor-reversal" (as opposed to flour-reversal, a phrase often seen in un-edited docs here). Give me an hour to research catalytic reactions, though :)
