The easiest way to create PDFs from OpenOffice is by upgrading to OpenOffice 1.1.x, which includes saving as PDF as a built-in feature.

The next solution, if you can't upgrade for some reason, would be to install Ghostscript <http://www.ghostscript.com/>, which will let you create PDFs from any program that can print to a file through a Postscript print driver (which is probably most GUI applications on your platform). The steps will be print to a Postscript file, then run the file through the ps2pdf script included with Ghostscript.

Hope this helps,
Mike

Well, I'd be creating Word docs (and whatever else it can export) with OpenOffice 1.0.3 (which doesn't include the PDF output, I believe). Are there other ways on an SGI? We're talking free here.
