Very briefly, every website on the Internet has:

1. A physical location for its HTML pages on a computer somewhere on Earth
for which it pays a monthly/yearly fee. A company that provides this service
may be called a "webhosting company" or an "ISP" (Internet Service
Provider).

2. A unique name (called a "domain") that is "rented" -- not purchased
outright.

Note: If the nonprofit already has e-mail service and Internet connectivity,
it may have the above services available to it through the same company.
That company may also be able to do the administrative work related to the
purchasing of a domain. Some companies may have special webhosting rates for
nonprofits.

-------------
Therefore, the first thing to do is decide *where* you want the HTML pages
to be physically stored and then go from there to find a company, purchase a
domain, purchase a webhosting plan, and upload the HTML files. However, if
the organization gets webhosting through another institution, it may not be
able to have its own domain. The difference would be as follows:

www.some-educational-institution.edu/greatnonprofit.html

-vs.-

www.greatnonprofit.org

If it's important for the name of the organization not to be subordinate to
the name of another institution, you may not be able to use the other
institution's webhosting capabilities. However, if you could live with being
just a page or a group of pages under the domain
"some-educational-institution.edu," then you don't need your own domain
because you will be under the educational institution's domain.
