Everyone,

This message is a bit long, and I apologize for that, but it contains
important information that I hope you will all read.

TECHWR-L is not the right place for this post for a couple of reasons:

1) It is not specifically related to technical communication.
2) The poster included his Web site addresses.

I wrote to him offlist, and have resolved the issue satisfactorily on both
sides. No, he has not been suspended. :)

I just wanted to take a moment to clarify some things about the no ads
policy on TECHWR-L.

Original posts _cannot_ include ads of any kind, including your Web site
address, your company's Web site address, etc. An example would be, "Hey
everyone, our company just came out with a great new product, ABC
Software. Check it out at oursite.com."

Why aren't these types of posts allowed? Because the primary beneficiary
is one person out of 5,100 list members, and it diminishes the value of
ads placed by paying sponsors and advertisers (and without them, this list
and the Web site would soon disappear).

On the other hand, posts to TECHWR-L that are in response to someone
else's question can include any relevant information, including your own
Web site, information on your product, information on a product produced
by the company you work for, etc. The key words here are _response_ and
_relevant_.

You can also include information such as your Web address, or a brief
statement that you're looking for work in your sig line (but don't go
posting your resume in your sig line!).

Why are these types of posts allowed? Because someone who asked a question
stands to benefit now, other people may benefit now, and the post will be
in the archives for others to benefit from in the future. It's a win-win
situation for everyone.

Additionally, if you are surfing and find something that you think might
be of general interest to technical communicators, you can post it
provided you can state (honestly, of course!) that you have no financial
interest in the company. An example of this would be, "I was looking for
something online last night, and found this product, which I think others
might be interested in. The site is newproduct.com. I have no connection
with New Product's company."

If you want to post something that would be considered an ad, if you
aren't sure if what you want to post would be considered an ad, or if you
have any other questions about this, please contact me at lisa at techwr-l
dot com.

Thanks!

Lisa B.
