Thanks to all for suggestions -- no magic bullet found, but the best idea
probably came from Suzy Davis on Word-PC, who suggests the following macro
scenario:

"You can hijack the built-in Print command (and not sure if this is in all
circumstances, but certainly from the menu and button), and precede the
built-in Print command with an add watermark, print and then remove it. As
you need a variety of watermarks, you would probably need to add a dialogue
where the user selects the watermark (draft, obsolete etc)."
