It's true that is a great increase, but I think it also reflects a
growing middle-class economy in India (and so, a general rise in
salaries as the years pass), in addition to the extra years of
experience. I cannot speak too intelligently about Indian economy, but I
do remember that India had a problem with a complete flight of the
middle class, and that their government has been working very hard to
correct that problem.

I have a hard time understanding the true cost of things, though. How
far does USD 6306 go in India? Prasanna says that:
- A very basic living (perhaps subsistence level) is at INR 100000 (USD
2326).
- A middle-class income, with enough for a family of four, is INR
500000 (USD 11628).

So, beginner writers make more than subsistence, but less than a
middle-class income. After 6-10 years of experience, they can earn
enough to raise a family.

Frankly, if I had started this career with an income that only afforded
the very basics (*), I'm not sure I would've chosen to be a tech writer.
After 6-10 years, I bet those salary increases are VERY welcomed.

* When I say affording only the basics, I certainly do not mean choosing
to have basic cable TV instead of all the premier channels; only eating
out several times a week; not being able to trade in my car for a newer
model; etc. I'm sure you understand ...

Katherine

One thing stands out for me: salary after 10 years experience is more
than 5 times entry-level salary, and after 11 years or more it's more
than 7 times entry-level (based on the Trim/Mean values in section 3).

Try getting that kind of a raise in the US!! Here, once you approach 2X
entry-level salary, you become layoff bait.
