OK. Perhaps I was over-reacting, but as I stated before the blonde and cute thing annoyed me. Where are the women on techwhirler? Not one woman has answered this post, It's guys, and well we all know men and women think differently.

Ok, I must admit that my first assumption was that the original email was a troll, so I just left it alone. Now that everyone else has set a better example, I suppose I might have something to say too.
It's this: different cultures are different. There can be additional issues when you look obviously Other, but I think the cultural difference is a more important thing to think and learn about.

Here is a very minor example. I grew up in New Zealand, which on paper is a lot like the US. One-time British colony, English-speaking, many waves of immigration, blah blah blah. I moved to the US for grad school. Accustomed to grabbing nearby colleagues for mid-afternoon coffee runs, I maintained this practice in my new surroundings. Eventually I realized that to some of my coffee companions, these were "dates".

Different cultures are different.

What you do, and how well you understand what other people do, is probably more important than how you look. Neither my skin color nor my name signal me as a potential "foreigner" in America, but I still am one. (And everyone knows it as soon as I open my mouth).
