Hi Ola

The scripts are normally injected into the topics during the process of generating WebHelp or FlashHelp. Essentially, they perform some sniffing to see what browser is being used, then tweaking things a bit in hopes of better accommodating different browsers. From there, they sniff again to see if the topic is being displayed inside the WebHelp/FlashHelp frameset. If so, nothing further needs to happen. If not, (depending on your generation settings) they may handle inserting a link that allows the user to click to wrap the WebHelp/FlashHelp frameset around the topic.

For a long time I wondered how folks managed to shoot themselves in the foot by ending up with WebHelp/FlashHelp OUTPUT files overlaying the nice and pristine SOURCE files. Then I finally discovered that the answer is often that the author has aimed the publishing target so it overlays the source files. And well, that's the job of the publishing bit. To replace files.

Hopefully this helps a bit... Rick :)

Dan,

Thanks for causing me to take a second look at Rick's Web page.

I took the script references out of the true code, as per the instructions.
I removed them from only one topic and then re-compiled and detected no OOM
errors. This, in spite of my having left most of the offending topics
"uncleaned."

Interestingly, this morning was the first time I used the new installation
of version X5, upgrading from X3. I'm wondering if that had anything to do
with the problem not showing.

I checked the true code for many other topics in that project and found
script in topics that offered no problems. Being a slightly obsessive
compulsive text cleaner, I "cleaned up" several of them. Removing them
seemed to make no difference in how the topic displayed when compiled.

However, I'm wondering if anyone knows the purpose of these scripts. Many
(most/all?) of them seemed to be javascripts and in a section labeled
"scripts".

So much to learn....
Ola
