Tammy Van Boening wondered: <<My group has inherited tons and tons of
Word docs written in a very old version of Word. I have Word 2003 on
Windows XP2. I am able to open the Word documents just fine. They are
a mix of styles and overridden Normal... My first task is to get the
paragraph styles we use in Framemaker and the styles used in these
Word documents in synch. For example, we have a HeadLev1 paragraph
style in our Framemaker templates so I want to take all the Heading 1
styles in these Word documents and get them converted to HeadLev1. Is
there a way to globally change styles in Word like you can globally
change paragraph tags in Framemaker?>>

Before you begin, define all the style names you plan to use in the
final document. The solution you're seeking is then hidden in plain
sight: in the search and replace dialog. First, expand this box to
show all the options. Position the cursor in the "find what" field,
make sure this field is blank (delete any contents left over from
previous searches), and click the Format button to pop up the list of
formatting options. Select Style, then select the style you want to
replace with a new style. Repeat this process in the "Replace with"
field, but this time, choose the replacement style. Click the
"replace all" button. Done! Repeat as necessary for all remaining
styles that must be replaced.

Well, not entirely done... all the manual overrides to Normal will
have to be identified so you can decide what to do about them. Some
will be easy to search and replace; others a bit more difficult.
You'll find wonderful advice on search and replace in Word provided
by Jack Lyon:
