I think David's statement highlights one of the problems facing a lot of
technical writers...whenever they hear the term marketing, their eyes glass
over and their ears plug. "I'm not a marketing guy..."

We are marketing ourselves all the time. You sell your ideas to your
supervisor for a new or revised manual. You market yourself for that merit
raise, or new position and you especially market yourself when it involves
finding jobs. It doesn't matter if that job is as a regular employee of a
regular company, or if you are looking for freelancing gigs. As Bill
stated...what do you do to make your application get noticed? That's another
way of saying how do you market yourself to potential employers. There are a
plethora ways to do this without having to wear a plaid suit and act like a
used car salesperson. I believe what Bill was asking is what works for you.
