Technical writing actually was my "first ambition."
It was the first line of work I considered that wasn't
preceded in my mind by "well, I guess I could be
a...." It was just that in order to be the kind of
technical writer I chose to be I first needed to
serve an apprenticeship as an engineer.

I think of "my career" as the sum total of everything
I've ever done, not just one type of work. I haven't
had "a career" as an engineer, "a career" as a
technical writer and "a career" as a manager.
My "career ambition" has been to be a successful
and satisfied Gene Kim-Eng; every position I've
taken to get here and stay here, regardless of
what field it happened to be in, has just been a job.
