Sarah: I meant to send this to the whole list--sorry 'bout that.

I don't have a novel in the works, and I probably never will. I do have
several nonfiction book ideas, but--you asked about novels. ;-)

I do not--gasp--write for fun. I write for a living. When I write the
nonfiction books alluded to above, it'll be out of passion for the subject
matter, not because I *love* the act of writing THAT much.

Actually the profession I'd really like to be in right now is paralegal
(which does involve *some* writing), but these days, I'm mighty grateful
to have a job.

:-)

Mike:

I co-wrote three books, which spent several weeks on the NY Times Best
Seller list; my name is on the title page. They had nothing to do with
technology, but they got me my first technical writing assignment, from
a software manager who loved The X-Files. I can't see that they've done
much for me since then, at least not in the tech writing world.

As for writing books, are there any technical writers on this list who
*don't* have a Great American Novel in progress? All the ones I've
worked with over the last few years have one in the works. I'm on my
fourth.

Sarah

As someone who who got into this game very late, and who also shudders
at
the very idea of being a manager (with apologies to those who enjoy the
role), I have one piece of advice: Write a book with your name on it.
