Thanks Jim, you post put me on the right path.

I used a tool from adobe to remove all instance of Flash Player from my
system and Chrome perked right back up. I did notice that before I used
Adobe's tool there was an extra listing for the Flash Palyer plugin in my
add/remove program dialog displaying no file size and no last used date.

So it looks like the ADM crash left some stuff laying around that was
somehow fouling Chrome's ability to see the Internet. too weird, but I
couldn't make this stuff up if I tried.
