I would argue that it has probably always been time to do that. The more ways
you can insert your services into a company's operational plan, the better, and
the best way to ensure that you get recognition for it is to make it part of
your official job functions, with objectives, success criteria and all. When
the idea of laying off the tech writer is raised at a management meeting, you
want as many managers as possible to object to it.
