Have you considered a table with If you have X, do Y steps, if you have Z,
do W steps? I've done that if the steps are small at the break points.

Situation: Repair/Option kits that cover a product that is sold with
multiple options. Depending on your option, you may not be doing every
section of instructions within the kit.

Does anyone have suggestions for calling out steps which indicate that you
need to JUMP OVER the following step(s)? Case in point is Section 1, step 3
below. Feedback we recently received was that they want this to stand out
somehow (it's been like this for 7+ years... and they just NOW decide that
they don't like it???)

Docs are currently printed in b/w. Color printing may or may not (likely
may not) be an option, so that is a last resort.

If/Then table:
If you have Option A, go to Section 1.
If you have Option B, go to Section 2.

Section 1 - Option A:
1. Do something.
2. Do something else.
3. Go to Section 3.

Section 2 - Option B:
1. Another step.
2. Yet another step.
3. Continue with Section 3.

Section 3 - Common to A and B.
1. Step.
2. Step.
3. Etc.
