Most contract staffing agencies are also direct-employment agencies. A client wanting to hire a contracted worker direct pays a percentage of the new hire's salary (typically, 10-20 per cent of the first-year salary, paid after the employee clears a 90-day probation period). Basically, the same as if the agency had recruited you for the client as a direct-hire in the first place.

The buyout clause only applies to the staffing agency's client (where Ed is currently working... as far as I can tell, it's not his former employer). If the staffing agency's client would like to hire Ed as a full-time employee then the client would have to comply with the buyout clause.
