True, pre-installed systems have long included plenty of junk. The
newer thing, to me, Steve, is that Microsoft is now packaging some of
the junk in with the OS in a way that makes it difficult to avoid:
* You have to accept the McAfee licence agreement before Windows 10
will install. Having installed Windows, it's awkward (deliberately so)
to uninstall McAfee.
* I followed the recommended configuration steps to disable the
high-profile spyware such as Cortana. What a surprise then to see a
Cortana process listed in Task Manager.

Unfortunately this is a delightful feature of most pre-installed
systems, so doesn't really factor into the decision. The Aussie
company that sold me the ASUS had a bunch of malware on it that I had
to hunt down and remove. Further note on the ASUS lappies - they run
quite warm, but are slim and light. I had mine on my lap for a few
hours, it was noticeably very warm on my legs, but not so bad I had to
put anything between it and me.

The main annoyance is all the the phone-home spyware and junk
(McAfee). It's like an aggressive, persistent pickpocket who insists
that you to buy back your wallet and car keys.
