What is the tool of choice?? - What is the job to be done?

The new versions of Word and WordPerfect look pretty spiffy based on the reviews
in the trade press. They pick up more and more features with each release. WP
has spreadsheet and graphics tools now. The fix the typos as you go feature in
WinWord 6 looks like a speed typer's dream.

But do they do what the heavy duty DTP programs do? Or more to the point, with
what ease. I don't know. If you aren't doing multi document books, then the
word processors may well be all you need.

My work has been done mostly in Interleaf and Frame. If you know Interleaf, the
conceptual move to Frame should be fairly simple. In general I find Frame
easier to use, although Interleaf does a few things that I wish Frame did.

Whatever you decide, you probably don't want a 386. You need a 486 with lots
of RAM and hard disk space. And get a big monitor. The hardest thing for me
when I move from my SUN to a PC with a 14" monitor is seeing only 1/3 to 1/2
a page at a time instead of a whole page like I do on the SUN.

You might want to try to find someone who has the stuff you are interested in
and try before you buy.

Bye. Happy Holidays.
