"Versions of this software prior to/before X.x" both sound sorta wierd
to me, but I wouldn't edit either out of a sentence. When I write such
things, I usually don't use "versions" as the subject/object. I'll
write:

Before version X.X, Farklesnarben caused cancer. This bug has been fixed.

I've had some bad comments on such a format internally, especially from
marketing. Apparantly its bad to admit that you ever had a bug. Sales
doesn't seem to mind, support likes the format and development doesn't
care how it's phrased.
