Scott,

I think there is no question that you need to "change the masses". As
you stated, you're putting out innaccurate information. Imagine trying
to explain to a new-hire (or anyone else outside the company) that you
are using terms incorrectly--but you know about it!

Maybe upper management or the Document Control group could put out a
memo stating that, "as of January x, we will use the correct
terminology blah, blah, blah". And set a date for EVERYONE to start
doing it (it is imperative that EVERYONE does it). You can go back and
revise the old documentation later.

I don't know about your company, but if that were to happen within my
company, there would be all sorts of ISO implications, not to mention
bidding on government contracts, etc.

I think the short time it will take everyone to get accustomed will be
well worth the benefits of having accurate documentation.
