The problem is Word's Fast Save feature. The first time you save a file
the file contains only the words, formatting, and graphics entered
before that first save. If you have the Fast Save feature on,
subsequent saves "tack a picture" of the changed document onto the end
of the file. That is, Word does *not* immediately insert your changes,
it *adds* them. Z-O-O-O-O-M-M-M goes the file size.

At some point, Word decides that it's time to do a real save instead of
a fast save. At this time deleted text and graphics are *really*
deleted; inserted text and graphics are actually slid into the proper
places in the document. .... And the file size contracts.

I know that understanding it helps only a little, but at least you know
there's some reason for it all.

If I can be of help, just write.
