It seems that there is not a common convention. I've seen nearly all your
examples at one time or another. The most common one I've seen lately, in
the context of C, C++, and Java, is the "0x20" convention.

Whatever you do, pick one, use it everywhere, and explain it somewhere,
preferably in a few places where you've used it in the document.
