This may or may not be your problem, but for what it's worth:

I encountered a similar situation a few weeks ago and determined that
our department had been whacked by a case of the "CAP" macro virus
(confirmed by a call into Microsoft).

McAfee's VirusScan solved the problem. Alternatively, the Microsoft
Knowledge Base article "What to Do If You Have a Macro Virus"
(http://www.microsoft.com/kb/articles/q134/7/27.htm) outlines various
workarounds that do not require anti-virus software.
