Pat, whether you like it or not, people will develop opinions about
others based on their posts to this list. There are a couple of people I
would never ever work with (given a choice) based on what I've learned
about them through their posts. There are also people I would take a pay
cut to work with based on their posts. Nobody is going to make a
hire/not hire decision based soley on what they read on techwr-l, but if
you think it has no influence you are sadly mistaken.

Whims? I don't think so. We're not talking about "John said he brings
food for SMEs so I won't hire him." If you pay attention, you can find
out who knows how to ask intelligent questions, who is a pompous
windbag, who can admit when they've made a mistake, who is hard-headed
and set in their ways, who has a sense of humor that matches your own,
who uses spell-check... these are good things to know. Techwr-l provides
as many networking opportunities as STC, and if you choose not to take
advantage, that's your decision. But to say "nobody should form opinions
from my posts because it's just a listserv" is hiding your head in the
sand.
