At Nortel Networks (once fondly known as Bay Networks), we provide our
documentation free of charge over the Internet AND on CD-ROM. Up until the
release on which we're currently working, we have also provided, for a fee,
hard-copy documentation. Now we offer only online documents, and anyone can
view them. Some are in pdf format, some in HTML, some in both. The
documents currently on the site are, I think, the ones we released last
summer, but a new release should be up there shortly. Our users and our
tech support people like the online search capability and the instant
availability. Some people miss the paper. The documentation is the same in
both cases, although we have made some modifications to the former paper
format to accommodate the electronic media.

You are welcome to visit our site and check things out for yourself:

Please keep in mind that this is a continual "work in progress," as our
product release cycles are about 3 months long. Eliminating the printing
time helps us keep our documentation more closely aligned with the
software. We make changes as late as possible in the product cycle.

BTW, our chief competitor, Cisco Systems, also makes its documentation
freely available. You can find their docs at:

I'd be interested in your feedback.
