I too don't want to start a flame war, but you might
want to consider one or more of the IEEE or ACM groups
that deal with subject matter areas.

I belong to the Association of Image and Information
Management (AIIM) which is a document- and knowledge-
management industry group. It doesn't help me write
sentences better or create great help systems using
new media. It does, however, provide a wealth of
background material about that subject matter area.

While others might not have that interest, the information
I've gained has given a wider and deeper understanding
of how people use those products in the real industry, as
opposed to just the projects I work on.

And, I do have to admit, document management technologies
are a passion of mine. As a matter of fact, I DO like
file cabinets. I even attended a tour of a corporate
records center once (but don't tell anyone; it's too
embarrassing).... ;-)
