I'm not old enough to have faced age discrimination very much. True, at one company I was at, anyone over 25 was considered ready for the care home; when I quit, the CEO told one potential employer that I didn't fit in with such a young crowd, although the real reason I left was the CEO, who was my own age. However, I've always looked younger than my age and always been among the fitter people in the office, and I have a few decades left in me yet, so it's never been much of a problem - so far.

But I've seen it a few times, and I agree that it's often much stronger among developers. In fact, that's why I think it may be more of a factor in startups and small companies. These companies often include developers as founders, and, even when they don't, developers are often disproportionately represented, simply because a company needs products before it worries about marketing them. Also, many newer companies hire twentysomethings because they'll work more cheaply. By contrast, older and larger companies have more diverse employees, so age tends to matter less to them.

Or so my theory of the week runs.
