How long are you expecting this Publications Manager to be around for?
Two years? Five years? I'm not sure what the current stats are, but
about ten years ago I heard that the average professional changes jobs
an average of seven jobs in their lifetime. And that's for the general
public, not the information technology sector where I would imagine the
average is closer to twice that.

This point has been made, but let me re-emphasize it. Combining the
volatility of the economy with the increasingly nomadic working
population means that we are all, in a sense, contracting. Job security
is becoming something of a four-letter word. The best approach I've
heard recently regarding this is that full-time workers should conduct
their work as if they're contracting for their bosses. Not only does
this push responsibility down ye olde org chart, but it discourages
micro-management. DB.
