Little old me said:

...and I've been getting deluged off-list with articulate arguments
showing me the error of my ways.

To clarify: I am NOT opposed to trademark protection - I favor it.

I was flippantly commenting about an anomalous situation I perceive - one
where companies who were smart enough to protect their trademarks ALSO
enjoy the ultimate level of name-recognition; that of being a household
word, used generically within their respective industry.

It IS a double-edged sword, I agree. I guess I was just observing that
this handful of companies gets to have its cake and eat it too. And none
of them are owned by Bill Gates - what are the odds? :)
