I occasionally edit English translations for local independent translators. Several years ago, one of the translation contracts had an interesting fee structure:

Base = $ * source word count, if target file was smaller than source file

OR

Base + $ * (source word count + target word count) / 2,
if target file was larger than source file

There was also a bonus for small target file size (< specified k)

who was paid the bonus because she edited the target doc to reduce the file size
