I do the following:

1.) Check with the Marketing department. If they have a company wide
standard, I use it (I usually get points for knowing to ask...)
2.) Check what's been used in the past. If it's looks OK, I stick with
it.
3.) Use some combination of a serif font for body and Sans Serif for
headings. If I'm doing Online Help/web content, I use only sans serif.

Oh - I spent six years in printing a long time ago. I love design and
know fonts. I just don't think they have much bearing on tech writing.
