Hi Amanda,

This is not based on any scholarly research, just on my experience as head
of a combined Training/Documentation department in the financial software
industry. I think you'll find that you'll get varying responses depending
on background -- industry vs. academia, for example.

In my experience, the most important change in instructional design relates
to giving the learner control. With all the new technology -- CBT, WBT, all
types of distance learning, etc., the learner has a LOT more control over
the learning that takes place. It's exciting, and opens up a lot of new
opportunities, but it also has its attendant pitfalls and challenges. I
think it's already in the process of radically changing the rules of
instructional design.
