Well, as it happens . . .
I was working for a software company near here. My son's high school
decided to give credit for internships. He had been programming since
the fourth grade and had taught himself about four computer languages
including Pascal.
I introduced him to our VP of development, who put him to work on some
small clean-up and QA tasks.
By the time he graduated, He was one of the go-to programmers for
difficult problems.
During his first year of college he dropped out because of bribery.
No, not what you think . . . The software company offered to buy him a
car if he came back to work right away.
Since then he's worked for Borland and Microsoft (where he just
returned after taking a couple of years to go to college ... still no
degree but lots of knowledge).
So I guess the answer is yes.
