Actually, if you used File>Import>File to bring a Word file into
a FrameMaker template (rather than File>Open to directly open
the Word file itself), the headers and footers would be left
behind automatically. And if the styles in your FrameMaker
template use the same names as the Word styles, you have
the option of leaving most of the paragraph-level formatting
behind and using the FrameMaker style formatting. The only
thing you really needed to strip out of the Word files were
autonumbering and bullets.

Tables did cause some problems, particularly if the Word tables
used a lot of merged cells. But the issues with table borders,
heading and footing rows, and colums widths could all be fixed
very simply with Rick Quatro's excellent TableCleaner plugin.

I'm convinced that Word-to-FrameMaker conversion has a
reputation for being complicated and difficult only because
people have made it a complicated process.
