No matter how well understood the term "landline" is, the truth is that it's a slang word. It arose (borrowed, actually, from the nautical context) through common usage due to need, without there ever having been a legitimate term other than "telephone".

As ugly as they are, it seems to me that the closest thing to a legitimate word for a non-wireless phone is wireline, or wired phone.

I think this is a difficult question.

Per the now defunct Nortel, a landline is a telephone, alos known as a wireline phone.

I'm putting together a "se-Instead" glossary of terms to make our
customent facing support content more accessible.

We use the term landline phone differenciate from mobile phone and I
don't like "landline".

My target is 6th grade understanding. Anyone have any suggestions for
inplace of landline?
